beg respectfully to offer myself as
Candidate for the office of Attorney General
now vacant.
I have been in respectable standing as
a Barrister for nearly 20 years. From 1846 to 1856, I was the Barrister for the Crown in the Supreme Court; Parker, C.J. being the Chief Justice.
On the occasion
of a former
application for an office, I forwarded testimonials
of which I possess copies. If my present application should be favourably entertained, I could submit other Testimonials satisfactory to your Grace.
When the office I now seek was vacant on the recall of Mr. Anstey, Sir George Caine, Solicitor-General, stated that if I asked for the office I should be appointed. I did apply and having this recommendation, Mr. Merivale congratulated me as if appointed. At the last moment, however, Mr. Cave asked for the appointment and for reasons which I cannot object to, he was appointed.
I now venture to solicit a favourable consideration of this application.
To his Grace
The Duke of Newcastle,
My Lord Duke,
Your Grace's very obedient servant,
John Smale
